Lori Goldston & Swil Kanim will perform a live score to the film Heaven & Earth Magic
Sunday, December 3, 2023, 4:30 PM, Fairhaven Auditorium in Bellingham at WWU
On the Western Washington University campus, the Department of Music and the Department of Art & Art History will present Lori Goldston & Swil Kanim performing a live score to the film Heaven & Earth Magic by Harry Smith in the waning days of his centenary year.
A fittingly multisensory experience will occur on December 3, 2023 at the very Bellingham Normal (WWU) campus which, in 1930-32, our now-celebrated artist attended an experimental elementary school run by progressive educators.
“With a dynamic mix of sincerity and irony, Seattle composer Lori Goldston and violinist, native storyteller, Swil Kanim present original cello and violin score to films by Harry Smith in honor of his birth centenary year, inspired by his work as framer and amplifier of the sublime craft and beauty of organic indigenous, folk and underground cultures.”
This will happen in a context of live music performed during screenings of new media art by music students and works from the Art 335 class: Intermedia, Mixed Media, Time-Based Art and Installation. This class provides an advanced and ambitious project environment for studio practice in time-based media projects such as performance, sound and video, gallery presentation and site-specific installations.

“Hear a conversation with featured artists, where we try to answer the question "Who is Harry Smith and why do we care?", looking through a creative and critical lens at his life and legacy, its impact on American culture, art and music.”
Doors open at 4:00pm. Event begins at 4:30pm. Sunday, December 3, 2023
Bret Lunsford, author of Sounding for Harry Smith: Early Pacific Northwest Influences, will join the artists for a discussion of Harry Smith’s PNW roots.
